Ravindra Kaushik

In spite of the fact that the life of a covert agent is avoided the open eye, when from time to time, we go over captivating tales about them that arouses our interest significantly more, something which is likewise fuelled by government operative movies. What's more, in spite of the way that we never get any official affirmation on their missions and investigations, we can't shield ourselves from digging into their lives. It takes nerve and bravery to turn into a covert operative and nerves of steel and coarseness are what characterized Indian government agent Ravindra Kaushik whose life has propelled John Abraham's next film Romeo Akbar Walter.

Ravindra Kaushik

Real story of Ravindra Kaushik, the Indian raw agent that inspired Romeo Akbar Walter movie:

Born on April 11, 1952, in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, Kaushik was only 21 when he was spotted by the RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) officials at a national level dramatic meet, who approached him to work as an undercover agent in Pakistan. In the next two years, Kaushik was given an intense training where he learned the deadly tradecraft of modern-day spies. During his clandestine training, which was both mentally and physically straining, Kaushik learned Urdu and got well-versed in Muslim religion and its teachings. He even got circumcised so that nobody could raise doubt about his identity.

At a young age of 23, Kaushik, with a new identity and a new name- Nabi Ahmed Shakir- was sent to Pakistan on what would much later emerge as one of the greatest espionage missions of India. In Pakistan, Kaushik secured admission in Karachi University where he began studying law. Blending in with the local community and living there as one of their own, Kaushik then joined the Pakistani Army and moved up the ladder and became a Major. Kaushik also converted to Islam and married a local girl named Amanat with whom he also had a son.

While leading the life of a Pakistani national, Kaushik kept sending classified information to RAW. For his unmatched dedication towards serving his motherland, the then Home Minister of India, S.B Chavan, gave him the title of 'Black Tiger'.

But it only takes one error for an entire espionage operation to fall apart and for Kaushik, who had been extremely careful about his identity for years, misfortune came in the form of a low-level operative Inyat Mashi who was sent by the intelligence agencies to get in touch with Kaushik. Masih got caught by Pakistani intelligence and it wasn't much difficult for them to break him. While revealing all the information about the operation, he also revealed the true identity of Ravindra Kaushik. Kaushik got arrested by Pakistan and what followed was two years of extreme physical and mental torture. He spent the next 16 years of his life in different jails in several Pakistani cities including Sialkot, Kot Lakhpat and Mianwali where, in 2001, he died of pulmonary tuberculosis and heart disease in Central Jail Mianwali in Punjab, Pakistan.

What's even worse than his unfortunate end was the fact that the Indian government refused to own him. Such is the life of a spy working for his country. They're the unsung heroes who never get their due, or better yet, they perhaps don't even work for the dues. Kaushik's untold story has inspired many movies over the years, most recently to be reprised by John Abraham in Romeo Akbar Walter that releases in theaters April 5th.
