'112' As Single Emergency Number Of India

'112' As Single Emergency Number Of India

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed a single number i.e.112, on April 7, 2015, which could be used for all emergency phone calls across the country including for police, fire and ambulance. It is modelled on the lines of the all-inone emergency number ‘911’ in the USA.

The TRAI also suggested that existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101. 102', and 108 which are used for police, fire, and ambulance till now could be retained as secondary numbers. If any call is made to these numbers, the call
should be directed to the new single emergency number 112.

As per the TRAI, a SMSbased access to the new emergency number can also be provided. So users will be able to make calls on 112 from their mobile or landline phones, even if outgoing  call facility from their phone has been debarred or the service temporarily suspended.
